December 15, 2016
David Small (GBR) and Georgia Groen (NZL) have been named as the 2016 Male and Female IWWF Barefoot Athletes of the Year! This award was based on their performances in IWWF homologated tournaments throughout 2016.
David Small had a great year, setting a personal best of 14,050 in tricks and 20.3 in slalom, whilst also breaking the World Trick Record at 12,500. David has a set of pending trick records for 2016 of 12,850, 13,150, 13,300, 13,300 and 14,050. Coming in first place at the 2016 World Championships for tricks, slalom and overall placed David at the top of the list to achieve the 2016 IWWF Barefoot Athlete of the Year.
Georgia Groen did New Zealand proud, being the first New Zealand skier to achieve an Overall Gold Medal in a World Championships. In 2016 not only did Georgia break the New Zealand Jump Record with a score of 21.1, but also achieved a personal best in tricks (8,450), slalom (16.8), and jump (21.1). Along with her Gold medal in Overall Georgia won Gold in Tricks and Silver in both Slalom and Jump at the 2016 World Championships. Georgia has had an outstanding 2016 and is most deserving of the 2016 IWWF Barefoot Athlete of the Year award.
Many congratulations to David and Georgia. They both have not only shown great talent and athleticism, but a true dedication to the sport. They will both be honored with an awards presentation at the 2018 World Barefoot Waterski Championships at Dream Lake, Canada.
